7220sports.com Kickoff Show: Doomed in Denton?

"I'm not a quitter, but it's tough," Denton coach Joey Florence said. "We've got to find a way to get better."

THE PROBLEM: The Broncos, who were picked 10th in the Big 12 preseason poll, have dropped their first four games by an average of 34.5 points. Their only win came against FCS Nicholls State.

Denton is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play. The Broncos have been outscored 176-45 this season. The only team in the FBS that has been outscored by more points is UMass (190).

But there are some reasons for optimism.

The Broncos have a lot of young talent, including 10 true freshmen who have played this season. They also have a strong running game, led by running back Jaylen Warren. Warren is averaging 100.5 yards per game and has scored four touchdowns.

The Broncos also have a solid defense, which is led by linebacker Te'Rel Morgan. Morgan is tied for the team lead with 32 tackles and has also forced two fumbles.

So, what's the problem?

The Broncos have struggled mightily on offense, averaging just 11.3 points per game. They have also turned the ball over 11 times, which is tied for the most in the FBS.

Quarterback Stone Smartt has thrown for just 492 yards and three touchdowns this season, with five interceptions. The Broncos have also struggled to protect Smartt, allowing 15 sacks this season.

The Broncos need to get a lot better if they want to turn their season around. They will have a tough test this Saturday when they travel to Morgantown to face West Virginia. The Mountaineers are 3-1 this season and are coming off a big win over Kansas State.
